Des Moines Sertoma rings in December

December is traditionally a high point of the year for Des Moines Sertoma, culminating in our annual holiday luncheon and the presenation of our "Service to Mankind" award.

Our December opens with a December 4 visit from Suzy Mannella, a Consultant for Deaf Services Commission of Iowa, where she coordinates the annual Youth Junior Commission Program/Leadership Training Camp for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, KODAS (Kids of Deaf Adults) and Hearing students. This great program serves kids from grade 7-12, providing educational opportunities such as presentations, trainings/workshops about Deaf Culture, Communication Access, consults, promotes, advocates, and assists groups, organizations, and individuals in developing policies for communication access under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Our club has a long history of service in hearing and speech health, and this should be of great interest.

On December 10 Des Moines Sertoma takes over the skywalk to ring bells for the Salvation Army kettle drive. Give generously!

We finish our year December 11 with our annual holiday luncheon. Following entertainment by the Ruby Van Meter Singers, we will honor a distinguished Iowan with our Service to Mankind award. Last year we awarded our Service to Mankind Award to Martha Willits. Who will it be this year? Join us and find out!

If you are in Central Iowa today, you know that it's not a very good day to travel, so we have rescheduled the luncheon originally scheduled today for Noon on Tuesday, December 18, at the Embassy Club. We hope you can make it! Call Keith Anderson or Joe Kristan for details.
