This is one of those rare Civil War books that is based upon an original concept, and that fresh idea is well developed by the author.

Paul Ronan focuses on how effectively or ineffectively our 15 antebellum presidents acted to prevent civil war by trying or not trying to bring slavery to a peaceful end.

This should be a great presentation on issues that continue to resonate. Thanks to Russ Currier for helping to arrange this.

Barnstorming into Spring with Des Moines Sertoma!

The weather is finally warming up, but things are always bubbling at the Des Moines Sertoma Club! We this month’s schedule with an April 5 visit from Mary Brubaker. A long-time KCCI-TV personality, Mary is involved in community activities from the Arts to Alzheimer’s Disease. This will be a great presentation, and you don’t want to miss it!

We next get together April 19 to hear from John Gregory, the Iowa Barnstormers Head Coach, who had to reschedule his visit scheduled for March. Coach Gregory will get us fired up for…

… our April 30 evening outing, when we go to Wells Fargo Arena to see our Arena Football Team play the Philadelphia Soul. AFL games are great fun and wonderful spectacle. You need to reserve your tickets for this Sertoma outing, so contact Joe Kristan to let him know you want to go.

Club News

Our spring Highway Cleanup is set for May 7, so mark it on your calendar to help keep the freeway beautiful.

Bob Simons has started work to get ready for our State Fair Hearing and Speech Education Booth. This is a lot of work – help Bob get the word out about hearing safety by joining his planning group.

The club is considering a spring garage sale to raise funds for some of our charitable work. Let Craig Randall, Jeri Le Henry, or Joe Kristan know if you can help with goods or a place to hold the sale.

Campership! The club has been asked to contribute a $500 campership to help a needy hard-of-hearing child attend Camp Sertoma. An anonymous member will match up to $250 of Des Moines Sertoma contributions. Please give at one of the April meetings, or mail a donation to Club Treasurer Ron Mountsier at the same address you use to pay your Sertoma membership bill.

Bonus Tickets! The club has a voucher for four tickets available for the first Iowa Energy playoff game April 11 as a “thank you” from the team for our recent outing. First come, first serve. See Joe Kristan if you are interested.

February 2011: lots of Sertoma in a short month!

While February is the shortest month, the days are getting longer and, one hopes, a bit warmer. Come to the Des Moines Sertoma Club to warm up with a great slate of February lunch speakers.

We start on February 1 with a visit from Paula Vincent, Chief Administrator of the Heartland Area Education Agency. Dr. Vincent heads Iowa's largest AEA, which covers Audubon, Boone, Carroll, Dallas, Guthrie, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Polk, Story and Warren counties. This is a time of great ferment in the state educational system, and this promises to be a great session.

We move on to another matter entirely on February 15 when we hear from Brooks Reynolds, co-founder of the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. Brooks is the son of our 2010 Service to Mankind award winners, Stan Reynolds and Jody Reynolds, and he works as an account executive at Reynolds and Reynolds when he isn't promoting the most wonderful food known to humankind.

Our February Evening Meeting will be a night out at the Des Moines Buccaneers hockey game Tuesday, February 22. We hosted Scott Montesano, the teams announcer and Director of Corporate Sales, back in October. We’ll have a great time watching these remarkable young men play the Waterloo Black Hawks at Buccaneer Arena on Hickman road in Urbandale.

January 2011: the start of a great year to be a Sertoman!

Of course, every year is a great year to be part of Sertoma! The Des Moines Club looks forward to again promoting hearing health and our local mission at the Ruby Van Meter School for special-needs kids. Of course, we also have great times and great speakers at our regular lunch meetings, and January 2011 will be no exception.

We will meet in the "Board Room" of the Des Moines Club on the 33rd floor of Ruan Center (7th and Grand) in January.

Our first meeting in 2011 is January 4, when the club welcomes an advocate for our hearing and speech service mission: Martha Meyer of the Central Iowa Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America. The HLAA describes its mission as " to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support and advocacy."

Ron owned KFMG/KDMG, a full-power station at 103.3 FM. Years after selling that station he re-entered the radio game with the first low-power entry in the Des Moines market. With fresh legislation to encourage low-power stations just enacted, this will be an interesting and timely session.

Des Moines Sertoma Club keeps it warm for December 2010

While the calendar says the year is coming to an end, Sertoma rolls on!

The Des Moines Sertoma Club will have one regular lunch meeting this month. On December 7 we will host Cherie Burns, Director of Development & Community Relations for Childserve. Our club has worked a lot with Childserve and its predecessors over the years, and it’s always amazing to hear the incredible work Childserve does in Cenral Iowa. Remember, this meeting will be at 801 Grand on the 41st floor, in their Grill room.

Our annual Christmas lunch will be December 14 on the 40th floor at 801 Grand. This is always a great event, featuring our Service to Mankind award and the Ruby Van Meter Singers. Because the Des Moines Club is closing its 801 Grand location at year-end, this will be our last event at the top of Des Moines’ tallest building. See you there! Please get your reservations to Minda Barr (245-5283) as soon as possible.

The Club continues its tradition of ringing bells for the Salvation Army the day before our Christmas lunch. Sign up with Oliver Knuth.

The Des Moines Sertoma Club wishes you joyful holidays and invites you to join us in our mission of Service to Mankind!
