On Tuesday, December 2 we will watch the Drake women's basketball team take on Coppin State at the Knapp Center. We will have our first December lunch meeting that day too, so it could be somewhat confusing. In another event of note this month, our own David Beery will help sing the national anthem for the Iowa Chops November 13! You won't want to miss this! It's Fantasy Baseball Camp month for Des Moines Sertoma!  This is the tenth year of our partnership with the Iowa Cubs to provide a baseball experience for hearing-impaired youth.  We still have a few spots open, so if you know of a child - boy or girl - who is hearing-impaired and would like to work with real pro ballplayers, send an email to Paulette Taylor at taylord53@aol.com or call her at 515-224-6408.

 

Drake Athletic Director Sandy Hatfield Clubb makes a return visit to the club July 1.  It's been a very quiet year for Drake athletics, so we have no idea what she'll want to discuss.

 

On July 8 we host Kent Zimmerman, president and CEO of the Wallace House Foundation.  It's a great opportunity to get to know more about an important national historical family with deep Iowa roots.

 

July 15 will feature a pet cause of the Des Moines Sertoma club.  Dagny Fidler, Vice-Principal of the Ruby Van Meter school, will talk about the latest news at this special and important institution.

 

Our annual Golf outing is slated for July 22 at the Lake Panorama National Golf Course.  If you don't want to golf, come for the fun and the food at the Noyce house!

Club Reorganization

 

Joe Kristan and Craig Randall attended the Iowa District Regional Leadership Conference in Fort Dodge June 22.  International Director Tim Hazel explained why the national merger of the Sertoma International and Sertoma Foundation and the consequences for the clubs.  Key Points:

 

-Our local foundation and club must prepare and operate under a unified annual budget and prepare unified financial statements.

                                                                                                           

-We will have to file quarterly activity statements with the district, on pain of being dropped from the national group tax exemption.

 

-We will be able to continue our Fantasy Baseball skybox raffle, as long as we do it on a limited basis.

 

The district also needs leadership!  If you have served as a local leader, consider stepping up to district leadership.  Why let Ft. Dodge have all the fun?

 

 

What we've been up to

 

The Des Moines Sertoma Club installed its new officers at our annual dinner June 21.  Jeri Le Henry and Diana Van Vleet stepped up to be our new presidents at the Hyperion Field Club event.  Iowa District Governor Steve Brown discussed what's going on in Iowa Sertoma.  The food was great, and the Max Wellman Trio provided excellent entertainment.  Make your plans for next year!

 

We had some outstanding programs last month.  Don Wauters had a fascinating presentation on a world new to a lot of us - amateur auto racing - on June 3.   Our own Kip Peters and his son, Sebastian, had a great program about Sebastian's own passion for racing go-carts (75 miles per hour, 3 inches off the ground?  Amazing young man, that Sebastian!). 

 

Randyl Taber, a senior vice-president at A.G. Edwards, gave an outstanding explanation of the whys and wherefores of the recent increases in energy prices.  The answer is in the Far East.

In between we heard from the Newton Speedway and from a living legend. Oh,... THE CLEANUP A strong crew showed up on a chilly and windy Saturday to clean up the south side of I-235 east of 31st street. Bill Warrick, Jack Sink, Craig Randall, Will Canine, Kevin Krause, Jack Rivers, Rich Seibert and Joe Kristan took part, and former member Tony Aldridge pitched in. Do you have any idea how much junk can accumulate along a freeway? THE PITCH TOURNAMENT Van Seibert was denied a chance to run the tables and sweep the 2008 edition of the fund-raising Pitch Tournament for Ruby Van Meter School by the misfortune of being paired with a lame partner in the last round; he settled for a third-place finish. The title was instead claimed by the indomitable Dick Henry, followed by Jack Sink. The real winner, though were the kids at Ruby Van Meter, as they will benefit from the $500 check we will present the RVM Booster Club as a result of the tournament. WHAT ELSE HAS SERTOMA BEEN UP TO? Craig Armstrong, the General Manager of the Iowa Motor Speedway in Newton, gave an excellent virtual tour of the fine racing facility we have in our own backyard. Living legend Jim Zabel, who has done so much to help fund our Fantasy Baseball program, gave us his insights into the turbulent Iowa sports scened. Our own living legend Max Thompson shared his insights into the changes in the Iowa agricultural economy over the years. THE JUNE 2008 AGENDA June opens with Don Wauters, the owner of Priority Express, Inc., one of Iowa's largest small parcel carriers. He will keynote the June 3 luncheon meeting by telling us about his hobby as an amateur race car driver. Randyl Taber, a Senior Vice President at A.G. Edwards, joins us on June 10 to talk about the issues behind soaring energy prices. This is a return visit for Mr. Taber; he spoke to us a few years ago about the Enron scandal. Our own Kip Peters headlines the June 17 meeting. He will team up with his sons, Sebatian and Tristan, to talk about Kart racing. He says he'll be bringing speakers, so expect some noise! We will celebrate another year of Service to Mankind at our annual Inaugural Dinner on June 21; we will inaugurate Jeri Le Henri and Diana Van Vleet as co-presidents for the Sertoma year begging July 1. Before-dinner entertainment will be provided by The Max Wellman Trio. Good food, good fellowship, good times. Don't miss the social event of the season! Max will talk about how mechanization and high tech have changed farming, and he'll discuss and some of the economic, social, and environmental effects that came with these changes. You don't even have to know how to play - trust me, you'll learn in a hurry. All proceeds go to the Ruby Van Meter School, so it's good fun for a great cause. HIGHWAY CLEANUP! Our annual cleanup of our stretch of I-235 is Saturday, May 3. Meet at the parking lot of Macedonia Baptist Church on 31st Street, just north of the freeway, at 7:45 a.m. SPEAKING OF RUBY VAN METER: On May 1st at 1:00 PM Ruby Van Meter School will present its Spring Musical, "I Need A Vacation" in in the Ruby Van Meter School gymnasium. It is a great experience. ALSO SPEAKING OF RUBY VAN METER: Their annual activity day is June 2, from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Our club will be setting up and running the batting cage so help will be needed to set-up and tear down. It is an exciting and fun day for the students and a great way for Sertoma to stay in touch with Ruby Van Meter School. MEMBER NEWS At the April board meeting the club Board of Directors approved the membership nomination of John Frandson, a Managing Director at Principal Global. Be sure to give him a warm Sertoma welcome at the next meeting. Carl Bump has taken a new position at Nationwide downtown, a move that bodes well for him making it to more lunch meetings. Congratulations, Carl! SUMMER PICNIC Craig Randall has made arrangements to hold our summer picnic in the air-conditioned comfort of Salisbury House August 26. We'll also get a tour of this great piece of Des Moines history. CALL OUT FOR AUDIOLOGISTS Bob Simons asks member contact their audiologists to see if they would be willing to serve giving hearing screenings during the fair. The fair runs from August 7th through August 17th. See Bob or a committee member with any leads or questions. APRIL: FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES We had a great set of meetings in September. Bill Stowe took us on a tour of the Des Moines Underworld, showing us the challenges of civil engineering, sewage disposal and road clearing in a 160-year old settlement. Police Chief Judy Bradshaw aquainted us with the problems of a different kind of underworld at our April 15 meeting. Mike Glover from the Associated Press brought us up to date on the legislature and the future of the media on April 22. He made an arresting prediction: that there will be no newspapers made with actual paper in 10 years. FANTASY BASEBALL CAMP IS COMING UP! We had a well-attended kick-off event for the 2008 Fantasy Baseball Camp at the Cub Club in Principal Park. THE APRIL 2008 AGENDA We start a full slate of speakers this month with an April 1 visit by Jeff Lantz of the Iowa Cubs and Paulette Taylor, our Fantasy Baseball coordinator. Fire up for Fantasy Baseball and the I-Cubs season! Bill Stowe, Des Moines Assistant City Manager for Public Works and Engineering, will be our guest on April 8. We can expect some insight on how his department copes with its difficult weather and political challenges. April 15 is tax day. Be sure you finish your taxes early so you can lunch with Des Moines Police Chief Judy Bradshaw. The legislature should have things about wrapped up by April 22, when Associated Press political reporter Mike Glover visits our club. Mike was unexpectedly called away when he was originally scheduled to visit us last month. He'll have some great perspective about what they've been up to under the big dome. Our April evening meeting will be Tuesday, April 29, when we officially launch activities for this year's Fantasy Baseball camp at the Cub Club at Principal Park.. Social hour begins at 5:00, dinner at 6:00. This was a great outing last year, and you want to miss this edition. April 2008: like every month, a great month to be a Sertoman! Somehow we managed to visit the Drake Men’s Basketball team on the only game they lost this season at the Knapp Center. We did see the Drake Women pull out a gritty win over Bradley. Stepping up a level, the club saw the NBA Development League Iowa Energy win a wild one over Fort Wayne, 133-121. Our lunch meetings saw visits from Chuck Stull of Iowa Realty, where we got some inside scoop on the current unhappiness in the real estate market. Arvid Huisman visited us from the Salvation Army and gave a terrific account of that great organization’s current efforts. MEMBERSHIP CHANGES Marty Herrmann, a Vice-President with the Terrus Real Estate Group, and Diana Van Vleet of Bankers Trust recently joined the club. I do this so I have the exact amount of room between my stomach and pants button. It started today, so I may be a little growly by Tuesday’s meeting. It amazes me each year how Thanksgiving just seems to sneak up on me after Halloween. I actually contemplated this weekend to be proactive and put up my Christmas lights outside, but after watching a couple of great football games on TV, the day dwindled away and no lights can be seen outside the Bump household. Next week, I will be sure to do it. Anyway, enough about me. Last week, President Keith Anderson sent out an email about the Sy Gau Scholarship, but in case you lost that email here is more information. Attached is a copy of the 2008 Sy Gau $1000 Scholarship application. Please make as many copies as needed. Eligibility for the scholarship is the same as last year. The applicant must be a relative of a Sertoma member of the Great Plains Region. Theymust be a full time undergraduate student. High school seniors are also eligible. Only the 2008 application form will be accepted, prior yearsforms will not be considered. Deadline to return the application is January 31, 2008. Winners will be announced at the Great Plains Regional Convention at Brainerd in May. There will be one winner from each District in the Great Plains Region. The West Iowa District only had 3 applicants in 2004,4 applicants in 2005, 12 applicants in 2006 and 17 applicants in 2007. So please ask you’re your sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, grandsons, granddaughters, cousins, any relative. As you look at the application you will notice there is no mention of grade point or financial need, only community service & why it is important in life. This is probably the best odds at winning a $1,000 scholarship most students will ever see. Last years winner was Tallis Henry, daughter of JeriLee Henry a member of our Club. This is not our first winner from our club, so lets get another. The club manned a station at the Blank Park Zoo's "Night Eyes" event this year, where we provided information on preventing hearing loss to hundreds of goblins and their parents. Thanks to Craig Randell for getting this event set up. It was great exposure for the club and certainly an event to do again next year. I also want to welcome two new members to the club this month. Diana VanVleet is a Corporate Trust Officer with Bankers Trust Company. Marty Herrmann is a Vice President with the Terrus Real Estate Group. Make sure you introduce yourself to these new members in the coming weeks. Upcoming Speakers and Events Des Moines Sertoma drops the sticks and gloves in November! Charles Smithson Executive Director and Legal Counsel for the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board, visits us on November 13. We'll get to hear the latest from the front lines of this important and controversial area of public policy. Joan Wollenzien from the Iowa Donor Network is our November 20 guest speaker. The Iowa Donor Network is Iowa's Organ Procurement Organization, responsible for obtaining and placing donor organs statewide. Our November evening outing will be a trip to the Wells Fargo Arena November 27 to watch the Iowa Stars take on American Hockey League rival Houston. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Please also keep these two dates open in the month of December. We will be Bell Ringing for The Salvation Army on Monday December 10th and our annual Christmas Luncheon will be the following Day on Tuesday, December 11th. This weekend for football fans of the teams of Iowa, certainly had a rough weekend. With the close losses of Iowa and Iowa State and also the loss for Drake, certainly made it kind of a downer weekend. Though it was a great weekend and it should be of some consolation that Drake’s loss was to UNI, who is having a great season. Sport’s is always a good conservation starter at a Sertoma Club meeting, because we are passionate about our sports and have always followed our teams closely. So it is only fitting that the greatest sportscaster in Iowa history is going to help our club out. I know you have received a couple of emails on this already, but I do think it is worth mentioning again in our newsletter, what Jim Zabel is going to do for our very own Sertoma Club. This past Tuesday, Craig Randal made the announcement that the proceeds from the sale of a DVD produced by Iowa Sports Weekly and hosted by Jim Zabel would go to the Sertoma Club of Des Moines. The push for the sale of the DVD will through the end of the year since it would make good holiday gifts. Today on the Jim and Jim Show on WHO Radio 1040 AM Jim announced that the DVD's would go on sale and where the proceeds were going. The cost of the DVD is $20.00 and it can be made available to us as Sertomans to sell to friends or to personally purchase one. On the show today they did say where the DVD's can be obtained. As Sertoman we will probably get the chance to buy a DVD between now and November and more than likely Jim Zabel would be willing to autograph it personally for you. Sometime after the first of the year we will plan a Noon lunch program and Kim Baker one of the hosts of the Iowa Sports Weekly television show who will come and talk about what Iowa Sports Weekly is all about and present our club with a check. I think this is a great opportunity for our club and our programs. This is just another great thing for our club to get excited about, because this gives us more of an opportunity to be a club that helps the people of Des Moines. Upcoming Speakers and Events May 22nd our speaker is a name you are sure to remember it’s Rick Fredericksen. Rick was co-anchor at KCCI-TV on the 6 and 10 o’clock news casts he worked at KCCI from 1970 to 1982. He was paired with Paul Rhoades on the 6:00 News and Russ Van Dyke at 10, for several years. He was the Chief correspondent for CBS news in Bangkok and headed up their bureau. Earlier, he reported on the Viet Nam War in the Marine Corps. More recently he was the News Director of WOI Radio, and is now the Arts and Culture Reporter for newly organized Iowa Public Radio. Rick is a Des Moines native and a graduate of North High School and the Department of Defense Information School. He should have some interesting tales to tell so be thinking of questions for Rick. May 29th we will have our evening meeting at Calvin Community for the Annual Sertoma Pitch Tournament to benefit Ruby Van Meter School. Earl and Rick will have more on this as the date nears. June 5th Dr. Jim Wille, who is Certified in Pediatric and Adult Allergy will discuss the allergy season and things you can do and ways to make your life bearable this time of the year. June 12th meeting is “The Bioeconomy: Creating New Linkages Between Agriculture, Energy and the Environment” Our speaker is Jeanine Baldwin who serves as the County Extension Education Director with Iowa State University Extension in Polk County. With an annual budget of $1.3 million, Baldwin is responsible for providing extension programming to the citizens of Polk County Prior to working for Iowa State University, Ms. Baldwin served as the Vice President of the Jasper County Alliance for Economic Development and as Corporate Secretary and Human Resources Director for the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce Federation. Ms. Baldwin holds a master’s degree in public administration from Drake University. She and her husband Tim have four children and farm near Mingo. June 19th we will have a representative from the Iowa Cubs to talk about their organization, their commitment to the Fantasy Baseball Camp and draw the winner of the raffle for the July 20th Sky Box. Please remember that the he June evening meeting will go into July and it will be on Saturday July 7th at the Hyperion Field Club when Keith Anderson will be inaugurated as the new club President. The evening meeting in July is on the 31st and it is the annual trek to Lake Panorama for golf at the Panorama Country Club and Dick Noyce again will be the gracious host for steaks and all the works. We will be eating, meeting some of the campers and their families and there will be time for pitch and you may possibly get to tour the field. May 1st we will have the pleasure of having Mike Newell speak to our club. Currently Mike is a Senior Producer in Public Affairs at Iowa Public Television where he is in his 17th year as producer of the weekly “Iowa Press” program which focuses on policy and politics on a national and local scale. Additionally he produces debate coverage and other political programs. Mike is a native of Chicago and Milwaukee and came to Des Moines in 1964 as a scholarship football player (never took a snap) at Drake University where he graduated in 1968. He is the 2nd of eight children including brother John, a long-time fixture at KCCI-TV. Mike is married his wife is Mary Christine Newell he has two grown daughters, both in Chicago and two granddaughters. Through the years Mike has done play-by-play, was Jim Zabel’s assistant handling a daily sports report or two, television sports anchor work, and scoreboard and call in shows. In 1974 he went “freelance” and was the first ever to pull it off in our market. His resume is much too long to go into more detail you will just have to come to lunch and hear all about his career and life. I’m sure you will enjoy meting Mike. Also on May 1st Cindia Badger and perhaps a couple students from Ruby Van Meter School will be there shortly after Noon to talk to us about some things going on at the school while we have lunch. Those include the annual Spring Track and Field Day, the music festival, and a garage sale to help get money to carry on the programs that are so important to the school and students. May 8th, Jim Zabel will be joining us again. Recently there have been many things in the news that have pertained to sports. Here are a few that come to mind; Steve Alford leaving Iowa for New Mexico, The remarks that Don Imus made on his radio program regarding the Rutgers’s women’s basketball team and most recently perhaps the Masters Victory by Iowan Zack Johnson and I’m sure Jim will have opinions on those subjects and many more. So the day should be interesting and lively. May 15th KCCI Head Meteorologist John McLaughlin will be our speaker. He is taking time out of a very busy schedule to talk to us. He tells me that between his chopper business in the morning and KCCI in the afternoon and evenings he has little time to himself. I think we should consider ourselves fortunate to be able to have him as a guest so be thinking of questions you might want to ask him. May 22nd our speaker is a name you are sure to remember it’s Rick Fredericksen. Rick was co-anchor at KCCI-TV on the 6 and 10 o’clock news casts he worked at KCCI from 1970 to 1982. He was paired with Paul Rhoades on the 6:00 News and Russ Van Dyke at 10, for several years. He was the Chief correspondent for CBS news in Bangkok and headed up their bureau. Earlier, he reported on the Viet Nam War in the Marine Corps. More recently he was the News Director of WOI Radio, and is now the Arts and Culture Reporter for newly organized Iowa Public Radio. Rick is a Des Moines native and a graduate of North High School and the Department of Defense Information School. He should have some interesting tales to tell so be thinking of questions for Rick. May 29th we will have our evening meeting at Calvin Community for the Annual Sertoma Pitch Tournament to benefit Ruby Van Meter School. Earl and Rick will have more on this as the date nears. June 5th Dr. Jim Wille, who is Certified in Pediatric and Adult Allergy will discuss the allergy season and things you can do and ways to make your life bearable this time of the year. The June evening meeting will go into July and it will be on Saturday July 8th at the Hyperion Field Club when Keith Anderson will be inaugurated as the new club President. He has lined up a great menu and entertainment so we hope that this year’s event will be well attended. The evening meeting in July in on the 31st and it is the annual trek to Lake Panorama for golf at the Panorama Country Club and Dick Noyce again will be the gracious host for steaks and all the works. It is always a fun afternoon and evening. Be ready to sign up for a tee time. I may even try to play this year. Carl Bump Upcoming Evening Events Board Meeting - March 26th is the monthly Board Meeting at Noon in the Board Room Tuesday evening Meeting – It has been awhile since we had our last Sertoma evening meeting has been at a restaurant, but next Tuesday, March 27th the evening meeting will be at China One on Ingersoll from 5:50 – 8:30 Our next evening meeting which will be in April will be a tie in to our Fantasy Baseball camp. On Tuesday April 24th the evening meeting will be at the Iowa Cubs Club beginning at 5:30 when we will have the spring event to kick off Fantasy Baseball Camp. Wildwood Ranch is a 400-acre facility set in the scenic hills of Madison County, just south of Des Moines. It was founded in 2001 with the mission of providing life-changing opportunities and camp programs for at-risk and disadvantaged children. Kids from across the state are offered hope and love while being challenged to grow into leaders and people of integrity who contribute to the communities they live in. Well after three weeks of snow and cold weather, I am ready for it to be gone. I know last Tuesday a lot of people missed the meeting due to the weather, including myself. But, looking at this week’s forecast it looks like the weather sould be nice for the week. So no weather excuses to be used this week to get out of Bob Simon’s fines. We have a lot of things a head of us these next few weeks so let me give you a rundown. Drake Basketball We have a men’s basketball game upcoming for our evening program for February. We will be going to the men’s game this Wednesday February 21st where they will be playing Evansville. The Drake men’s team this year is the State’s large school basketball champions beating Iowa, Iowa State and UNI(twice) to win the mythical state crown. Is an unbelievable feat when you consider the talent levels of the teams. So go out and cheer the Drake men to a victory. This Tuesday Come out this Tuesday afternoon (February 20th), and to listen to Bipin Menon. He is a friend of Kevin Krause who will be sharing with us about the Indian culture. Should be an interesting topic and I encourage everyone to attend. Fantasy Baseball Camp Committee meeting Join the Fantasy Baseball camp planning committee. They will be meeting at John Badger's office on Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at 8:00 AM. They will be discussing the 2007 Camp budget/fundraising, Spring Event, and changes and improvements for this year's camp. All members are invited to attend. If you would like to attend please call Paulette Taylor at 224-6408 to let her know you are coming. For you new members, this would be a great way to get involved in the planning of a great event. Highway Clean up Not sure when this is schedule yet for the month of April, but it will be on one of the Saturdays. So start thinking ahead and reserve your Saturdays. The January 2nd meeting will be at the ChildServe campus in Johnston at Noon, the address is 5406 Merle Hay Road in Johnston. It is on the west side of the street just north of Johnston Drive near the Sonic Drive-Inn or the Subway. When you get there all you have to do is tell them you are there for the Sertoma meeting and you will be directed to the training center where we will meet. We will have lunch from In-the-Bag and our speaker will be Cheri Burns, Director of Development and Community Relations for ChildServe. We will need a count by December 28th because of the New Year Holiday. So please get you reservation into Keith by that date. Sertoma’s Salvation Army Kettle and Fundraising Drive Here are the totals from the checks Captain Oliver Knuth have received either at the Christmas Dinner or in the mail $3,115.00. And the kettle totals were $542.00. The individual totals at each location were: 194.95 at the oldYounkers, 143.40 at Capital Square, 109.95 at Bank of America, and 93.70 at Ruan. So all together we raised $3,657.00. Captain Oliver would like to thank you all your help and hard work for The Salvation Army. Sy Gau Scholarship The great plains region Sertoma Clubs once again have the chance to have a family member apply for $1,000 Sy Gau Scholarship. Eligibility for the scholarship is the same as last year. The applicant must be a relative of a Sertoma member of the Great Plains Region. They must be a full time undergraduate student. High school seniors are also eligible. Only the 2007 application form will be accepted, prior years forms will not be considered. Deadline to return the application is January 31, 2007. Winners will be announced at the Great Plains Regional Convention at St Cloud in May. There will be one winner from each District in the Great Plains Region. The West Iowa District only had 3 applicants in 2004, 4 applicants in 2005 and 12 applicants in 2006. So if you have a son, daughter, niece, nephew, grandson, granddaughter, cousin, or any relative. Have them apply. There is grade point or financial need, only community service & why it is important in life.
