Night Eyes!

The Des Moines Sertoma Club hosted a station at the Blank Park Zoo's annual "Night Eyes" trick or treat party. Hundreds of little goblins, and their parents, received information from Sertoma on preventing hearing loss. It won't taste as good as the candy they got, but it just might last longer.

FANTASY BASEBALL NIGHT AT THE BALLPARK

Our annual baseball camp for deaf and hearing-impaired kids once again went great. As always, the trip to Principal Park was a high point.

During the day the kids got a tour of the ballpark, including the dugouts.

They also got a tour of the non-public parts of the park, where they had a little more fun:

Rick Fredericksen; Priceless Zabel-ania

Rick Fredericksen was our guest on May 22, 2007. He told us war stories from his days with the Armed Forces Network in Vietnam and from his TV broadcasting days. He now is Arts and Culture Reporter for Iowa Public Radio, where he has put together an outstanding series of rare audio from Iowa history in the Iowa Archives project. Follow the link and hear the only surviving sounds of Riverview, among other treasures.

On May 22 we also awarded a rare complete set of the Jim Zabel cookbooks. Follow the recipes closely and you can be like Jim!

Highway adoption

The Des Moines Sertomans ganged up on the trash on the north side of Interstate 235 between Cottage Grove and 31st Street yesterday. The trash never had a chance.

Here Will Canine, Craig Randall, Keith Anderson, Dick Henry, an I-DOT representative, and Bill Warrick (back to camera) assemble to to battle with the trash. They ooze confidence, except Keith seems to be having second thoughts about his footwear.
